What are the advantages and disadvantages of an RCBO?

Current regs don’t really allow the use of single RCD boards anymore except for certain installations. The RCD trips if there is an imbalance due to a fault path from live to earth and or neutral to earth. If an rcd trips then everything upstream or connected after it loses powers. RCBO’s work exactly the same but it is only the circuit with the issue that trips. So in event of a say a cut cable whilst cutting the hedge or grass you won’t mind a RCD tripping everything as it’s a safety device, now you have a neutral to earth fault it could be on any circuit connected to that rcd you won’t know where it is unless you have test equipment. Usually neutral to earth faults can’t be found by turning off switches or breakers as these only isolate live conductors. RCBOs will still trip under neutral to earth faults but it will only be the circuit with the fault that will be affected.

Where can LED lights be used in the home?

Led can be used any where in the domestic home with no issues. They have got a lot more robust and can handle temperature ranges better. They don’t like extreme heat which may cause premature failure or require extra heatsink to dissipate heat away faster, this usually applies to commercial kitchens.

What are the advantages / disadvantages of using LED lights?

LED lamps and fittings are coming down in price too start. They run a lot cooler than halogen lamps so don’t suffer from the issues of heat build up on cables, connections, and materials in the ceilings. They are certainly less of a fire risk than halogen fittings. They last longer as a rule with lamp life up in the 30000hrs run time, they come with 2-3yr warranty so if you do have some that fail prematurely you can take them back for exchange. Lower running costs using on average 10x less energy than a halogen lamp. Disadvantages are higher inrush currents when first switching on so you have to design the amount of fittings that can be turned on at one time otherwise you can experience tripping the MCB. The dimmer has to be matched to LED as dimming led is not so straightforward. Most electricians have worked out what dimmers work best for the led fittings they prefer to install so the latter isn’t an issue. People often complain about the light output or colour temperature, I always say give it a couple of days before you decide you don’t like them due to you have got used too the poor light and colour rendering of halogen. When you call up a few days later I get told how much easier is to read now or how much brighter the room looks but don’t get asked to swap them back to halogen. The pro’s out way any cons and
