This is a hard one to answer. The best controls are usually the ones designed by the manufacturer for their own appliance as most 3rd party controls are simply on and off and don’t modulate. For user friendly 3rd party controls that are also smart I usually lean to the Honeywell T6 range as they can also be installed with multiple zones all on one app.

For us our staple is always nest, I have two of them running zones in house and when you get to grips with them they are great, super easy to use, nice big clear display, the app is easy to use and integrates well on android and apple. the feel of the product is far more superior to it's contenders after all it was designed by guy who did work at apple and it shows in product from the packaging through to the build of the product.

The nest is great with the open therm option for enabled boilers, the auto schedule that programs the thermostat based on your coming and going habits. It uses your phone proximity to turn off when you are out of the area and forgot to turn it off, it can connect to Alexa and Google for voice control and will work with Mi home thermostatic radiator valves to set different desired temperatures in each room that had one fitted and it connects to Wi-Fi without a separate modem or bridge.

The best is the hive. Its not just ease of use its the easier to install receiver, battery powered thermostat and ease of use app. Making it a favourite of mine, it's a well known brand which gives faith to customers. Though this was aimed at 2020 we now have the hive mini which offers the hive at a better price.

I’ve fitted quite a few different smart thermostats Hive, Nest, Wave and so on… I think it depends on the customer needs and ability to use it, it’s no good fitting a smart thermostat loaded with features if the end user is going to just turn heating on and off for an hour or two a day! You have to assess your customer then offer the best advice you can. Installing wise I do like the Hive for easy installation and set up and it’s user friendly but there are others that are easy to install and set up that are much cheaper as the market for smart controls is growing rapidly!

To comply with the latest regulations, new thermostats should be Boiler Plus compliant - all smart thermostats will meet this requirement but each boiler speaks a different language. Adding a smart thermostat to an old boiler with simple 240v on/off switching will not provide energy savings. Smart thermostats should be Opentherm compatible along with the boiler. Using the boiler manufacturer's own controls will provide the best results and modulation - e.g. vSmart on Vaillant boilers as they will speak the same "language"

Gas Guardian Ltd answered the question "What is the best smart thermostat in 2020?"

This question is difficult to answer, as there is no suits all recommendation. There are numerous differences among the smart thermostats and which is “best” comes down to what it is paired with and the end user needs. For someone looking for relatively basic feature set, but with option for remote control via a smartphone then Hive is an ok option at its price point. Some boilers are compatible with opentherm which gives the smart controls the ability to modulate the burner based on demand and other external influences (e.g. weather compensation based on outside temperature/forecast). These devices when connected correctly with a compatible boiler offer the best in terms of efficiency improvements. Unfortunately even if a device states that it is compatible with opentherm (which is a communication platform), it doesn’t always mean you will gain the full feature set offered as its implementation is not unified. I recommend that the “Best” thermostat is determined on a case by case basis with a conversation with the end user, identification of what boiler is present and assessing what would be the best suited for the individual circumstances.

I believe the best thermostat on the market is the Honeywell t6 controller available in different options . It has a multitude of options for control either basically or via apps or geofencing. The t6 has opentherm capability for maximum efficiency and communication with the Intergas range of boilers is a perfect combination

Customer dependant. Nest are really good, honeywell work really well. Haven't fitted many hive so won't comment much on those, I've had bad experiences with the Worcester smart stats. Don't seem to work very well if even at all. The honeywell combined with thermostatic heads work brilliant

I’ve personally installed Nest, Tado, Hive, Honeywell Evohome and the Bosch EasyControl. If I was installing a Worcester Bosch boiler I would go for the Bosch EasyControl as it will come under the boilers guarantee of up to 12 years. It will give you weather compensation as an option, as well as the option of purchasing the Bosch EasyControl thermostatic radiator valve heads. The radiator valve heads give you the option of bringing each room in your home on individually like the Honeywell evohome.

I've installed numerous Nest thermostats in customers houses as the design and easy of use make it highly appealing to customers. With clear instructions on how to be used customers are always happy. ESI thermostats are also a very reasonably priced. Very basic but perfect for landlord properties due to the price. Considering the price of the ESI thermostats they are very well made and nothing really goes wrong with them.

As I have 13 radiators on the 1st zone with a room thermostat, 2 Under Floor Heating circuits on overlay on the 2nd zone with a room thermostat & 3 UFH circuits in screed on the 3rd zone with 3 thermostats, I am limited a little as to the controls I can have & I strongly believe this is true of every household. The controls have to suit the system & also the person living there..... No point putting a smart controller in a house where they don't have WiFi or any experience with technology for example, they just won't understand how to use it & will always have problems!! I have installed lots of smart controllers over the years & they are all the same in my opinion in respect that they work over the internet but so different in operation. The Nest learning thermostat does wot it says with all the sensors in it for heat, light, movement etc it learns when you are in or not as well as having GPS capabilities so is probably the best 'smart' thinking thermostat & also has open therm capabilities. Atag One Controller & Honeywell T6 Lyric have Open Therm too for example. Then there are simple on/off controllers like Netatmo, Tado or Hive for example. I have a Heat Miser system in my house & it does wot we need it to do on a combi boiler. Smart thermostat really means they can work on the internet & can be controlled off a phone or with an Alexa, Google Home or IFTTT for example not that it is actually smart.....

Personally I’d recommend Nest, wired through OpenTherm makes it a class VI thermostat with savings of around 4% on consumption alone. That being said, The easiest Smart Thermostat to install and use is probably Hive, as it has a standardised backplate and the easiest to retrofit to an existing boiler.

There’s a magnificent choice of smart thermostats to connect to your heating nowadays, the most popular being Hive and Nest. Having installed a plethora of these manufacturers, both offer a fantastic back up service if things don’t go to plan. In my experience I’ve found the Nest to be the most user friendly, easiest to use and most reliable. To the point that I have a Nest in my own property, connected to cameras, video doorbell and smoke alarms.

EPH have been developing their products so they are user friendly and are kept at a great price. When pricing our jobs we do a price with EPH and give an option to upgrade. For build quality and options it’s really good. Everyone would be impressed and pleased with this one. Honeywell T6 is easier to use but does not have the wow factor of the Nest. The other options are the Honeywell single thermostat which is just mounted on the wall and simple to use though your phone. The Hive is a simple thermostat is nice in that it can be free standing.

As it has features to add on worcester's own smart Thermostatic Radiator Values and control them from there smart App control, and if you fit it the same time with any Worcester boiler you will get the length of the boiler guarantee on the smart control as well. So it's a win win situation.

I recommend the Drayton Wiser smart thermostat for customers who want an easy to use comprehensive unit with an intuitive app. It is a good looking unit with a controller which would replace your existing programmer/timer and wireless room thermostats so doesn't need a great deal of rewiring. It is easily upgradeable with app controlled trv's to specifically control individual rooms and smart plugs to control electrical appliances around the house. It's also one of the cheaper units especially if your house has 2 separate heating zones. They are British built and as a Wiser approved installer I can offer a 5yr guarantee.

Personally I would pick the Nest thermostat. It is easy for the user to set up and use. The green leaf feature shows when the users are saving energy. There is a sleek look to the nest as well which is pleasing to the eye. When set up correctly on certain boilers the nest can make a central heating system super efficient.

It is has Open Therm which helps improve efficiency and works brilliantly with certain boilers (Baxi 600).Allowing you to control not only the heating but also water temperatures through the Nest. Nest is definitely the most simple to use heating controler. If your boiler has OpenTherm technology then the Nest controls will be the most effecient heating control. Unfortunately Worcester boilers do not support OpenTherm technology. In order to get the most out of your Worcester boiler effeciency wise, you must fit Worcester controls. The bad news for Worcester boiler owners is that the Worcester controls are more expensive and not as easy to use as the Nest.
