There are several alternatives but the hikvision darkfighters or colour vu are the best products in my opinion they are also good value for money. I would personally recommend POE (power over ethernet) / Ip cameras as its more future proof but the range and quality on POC (power over coax) is still excellent and the equipment is cheaper.

Hikvision offer some amazing solutions for CCTV systems with continuing developments in night vision. The DarkFighter and ColorVu ranges have some great functionalities for both Day and Night vision, they are able to hold a colour image for longer as the daylight fades possibly all night if there is a streetlight close by, and the colorVu incorporates a built in light that will give that colour image all night. They have a range of quality options too, all the way up to 4K offering amazing image quality. There's nothing worse than finding out that CCTV footage is next to useless when it is really needed due to poor image quality.

Personally Hikvision would be all I would recommend, the versatility in the range for both night and day vision combined with either localised recording or IP (internet steaming) cameras and equipment are second to none! For night vision specifically, there are many options amongst the Hikvision range, budget dependant, there is guaranteed to be something to suit your needs.

Nightvision of CCTV is the most important thing about purchasing system as most thefts happen when in the night we would recommend the following. Hikvision systems have great night vision such as the Darkfighter and the Colourvu which provide a colour image at night Dahua starlights are also good providing an incredible image at night.

For installations where night vision is important we generally recommend and fit Dahua starlight cameras but this depends on the property and budget. Often it is sufficient and more cost effective to upgrade the external lighting or fit IR floodlights. You should also be aware that despite having IR some cameras can give major problems with The IR reflecting off objects. Vandal proof domes are particularly bad for this especially low budget cameras and lots of installers avoid them for them for this reason.

In general specialist cameras are available for extremes in light conditions like HIK Vision dark fighter range. Additional lighting is an alternative to compensate for the light conditions, if the IR range is rated at 30M assume that half that is more realistic. Some cameras spread the light better from the IR, and smart IR filters can help stop spots of light from showing on night images. Specialist cameras obviously come at a premium and it may be more cost effective to look at alternative lighting solutions but these will have additional running costs.

Night vision is a tricky question to answer as the property May be in total darkness or may have street lighting or spotlights but best inferred has to be starlight or dark fighters that we’ve used personally but we strongly recommend getting an engineer to check lighting before installation

Hikvision and Dahua have specific cameras for extra low light. Some off the shelf systems give a grainy ghost like image when the Infrareds are turned on. Your system should be well specified / designed taking into account available natural light and adding a solution that would work for your situation. With CCTV one solution doesn't work for all scenes and should always be tailored to your needs.

Most external cameras are equipped with Infra Red lighting to allow the camera to see in very low light levels. However they only give a black and white picture. OK for keeping an eye on things, but without colour images less useful as evidence. Cameras like System Qs Night Devil and Dahuas Starlight cameras can give a high quality colour image in almost total darkness. This comes at a cost of some motion blur if the subject moves quickly, but they still give a very use able image. Not cheap though.

All processional brands have IR(night vision) but the Hik-Vision dark fighter is a great camera when you lack light around your property.
