Dace Gas Services answered the question "What are the advantages of air source heat pumps?"

Different from a ground source heat pump, an air source heat pump extracts heat from the outside air in the same way that a fridge extracts heat from its inside. It can get heat from the air even when the temperature is as low as -15° C. Heat pumps have some impact on the environment as they need electricity to run, but the heat they extract from the ground, air, or water is constantly being renewed naturally. The benefits of air source heat pumps Lower fuel bills, especially if you are replacing conventional electric heating potential income through the UK government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) lower home carbon emissions, depending on which fuel you are replacing no fuel deliveries needed can heat your home as well as your water minimal maintenance required can be easier to install than a ground source heat pump. Unlike gas and oil boilers, heat pumps deliver heat at lower temperatures over much longer periods. During the winter they may need to be on constantly to heat your home efficiently. You will also notice that radiators won't feel as hot to the touch as they might do when you are using a gas or oil boiler.

Advantages of an air-to-air heat pump include: it is very efficient at converting energy to heat (optimum efficiency is when the difference between source and supply temperatures is very small) it provides a medium to fast source of heat. it has the ability to provide heating and cooling

If you are not connected to natural gas these are a great alternative. Much cheaper to run that lpg or electric systems whilst being very eco friendly. Our experience with air source has always been very happy end users. There are usually grants available to help fund the initial installation costs making it a good choice.

Air source heat pumps are great for if you are off the gas grid or don't want oil, lpg etc. They work amazingly with underfloor heating and can really heat up a house. There are a lot of factors to consider. The house needs to be well insulated and the installation needs to be near perfect. Knowing what materials you have used in the construction of the property also helps to spec the correct size heat pump. Combined with solar pv you would be paying next to nothing for heating and hot water.

If you are not on mains gas air source is the perfect choice Install costs are a little higher than oil, lpg and straight electric heating But the running cost over the life span of the heat pump will far out way the extra cost of installation Plus it’s a clean energy And with the Rhi payments it makes total sense

Air Source Heat Pumps save money. Heat pumps are much cheaper to run than direct electric heating systems. ASHPs are cheaper to run than oil boilers and can be cheaper than runing gas boilers. Because heat pumps can be fully automated they demand much less work than biomass boilers. Heat pumps save space. There are no fuel storage requirements. No need to manage fuel deliveries. No risk of fuel being stolen. Heat pumps are safe. There is no combustion involved and no emission of potentially dangerous gases. No flues are required. ASHPs require less maintenance than combustion based heating systems. They also have a longer life than combustion boilers. Heat pumps save carbon emissions. Unlike burning oil, gas, LPG or biomass, a heat pump produces no carbon emissions on site (and no carbon emissions at all, if a renewable source of electricity is used to power them).

Air source heat pumps or ASHP’s Are a alternative way to heat your home, they do not require any raw material like a modem boiler and only require a small amount of electricity to run the circulator pump and fan. ASHP’s are normally installed on major renovations as they work at a lower temperature even as low as -20c and are ideal with under floor heating, to use ASHPs with a radiator system the radiator would have to be resized as the flow and return temperatures are different to a modern boiler. Summary Low carbon foot print Energy efficient Operate at lower temperatures No need for fossil fuel (except electricla power)
